The Artistic Journey of Joanne and Michelle

Read about two extraordinary ladies and their amazing journey as they learn to paint, unlocking creativity and joy.
Over two years ago at a bustling fundraising market within our local shopping centre, I had the pleasure of meeting these two extraordinary ladies. Nicole, whom I had known from my time in aged care, introduced me to her lovely client, Joanne who was a ray of sunshine, radiating laughter and an irrepressible spirit. Little did I know that this chance encounter would mark the beginning of a beautiful artistic journey.
Joanne expressed an interest in joining one of my ‘Sip and Paint’ art classes, she wanted to learn to paint, and she promised to discuss it with her sister, Michelle and took my details.
True to her word, I received a call from Michelle, and our artistic adventure began.
Our Journey begins as they learn to paint
At first, the girls joined my art groups I was holding within a local community centre, they tried out various sessions, alcohol inks and acrylic and mixed media painting. They had a blast but felt they needed more personalized guidance. This led to the introduction of one-on-one support, a novel experience for me. Along the way, I delved into understanding the NDIS program, and now, after almost two enriching years, we continue our private art sessions.

Joanne is undoubtedly the comedian of our sessions with her hint of cheekiness and always smiling bringing joy to everyone around her… Her canvas often showcases playful and humorous creations that never fail to have us in fits of giggles. There’s always a bit of friendly banter with her dedicated support workers who accompany her to our sessions.

Michelle, continually astonishes me with her artistry. Despite living with a vision impairment, she approaches each project with unwavering passion and makes the cutest oops noises that has us giggling. While she may need a little extra support with colours and finer details, due to being colour blind and having limited vision. She consistently produces exquisite art. Her dedication extends beyond our sessions, as she enthusiastically pursues various other amazing crafts consistently and enjoys showing me her new ventures.

The fun we have!
Together, we share moments of joy, laughter, and artistic exploration. Witnessing Joanne and Michelle express themselves through their individual artworks brings me immeasurable fulfillment. Our sessions are filled with lively chatter and infectious laughter, a testament to the transformative power of art.
Over the course of these two years, both Joanne and Michelle have blossomed in their artistic journeys. Their confidence has soared, and their skills continue to evolve with each session. They regularly surprise me with challenging art inspirations, each opting for different subjects to keep me on my toes. Their art has touched the hearts of many, with pieces sold to eager buyers, and thoughtful gifts to friends and family, their creative journey shows no signs of slowing down.
I couldn’t be prouder of these remarkable women, and I’m deeply grateful that they choose me as their art teacher to utilise their NDIS funding for our art sessions fulfilling social, emotional and artistic expression. Art, after all, offers a precious opportunity for self-expression, relaxation, and stress relief, gifts we can all benefit from in our lives. As you enjoy the pictures of Joanne and Michelle’s creations, you’ll see it in their smiles—art truly speaks the language of the heart.
